The project

A wearable cup holder that clips to a waistband. The arm pivots freely so centripetal force during walking presses liquid down into the cup instead of sloshing it out — the same principle that keeps water in a bucket swung overhead. Fully passive: no electronics, no actuators, one pivot.

How it came together

  1. 01

    Identified the core physics: a freely pivoting arm lets centripetal force orient the cup so liquid presses into the base rather than over the rim.

  2. 02

    Designed a single-pivot mechanical linkage with a clip that mounts cleanly to a waistband.

  3. 03

    Iterated on arm length and pivot friction to balance responsiveness with stability during normal walking.

  4. 04

    Validated the design by walking with filled cups and observing no-spill behavior across paces.
