01 / Overview

The project

A full low-profile, ortholinear, column-staggered split keyboard built end-to-end. Custom PCBs handle the key matrix through diodes into a nice!nano controller, with ZMK firmware I wrote from scratch — keymaps, layers, Bluetooth pairing, and split-half communication. Designed around ergonomics first: column stagger that follows finger length, low-profile switches for a flatter wrist angle, and a split form factor for shoulder-width typing.

02 / The why

Why.

Design and build an ergonomic daily-driver keyboard from the ground up — not assemble a kit. A split, column-staggered, low-profile board tuned to my own hands, with firmware I actually understand and can extend.

04 / In depth

How it came together

  1. 01

    Designed the column-staggered ortholinear layout around finger length and reach, then laid out two mirrored halves for the split form factor.

  2. 02

    Drew schematics and routed the PCBs in KiCad — diode-per-key matrix into a nice!nano (nRF52840) controller on each half, with hand-solderable footprints for low-profile Choc switches.

  3. 03

    Modeled the case and plate in Fusion 360 for a low-profile stack, tuned for typing angle and switch retention.

  4. 04

    Wrote the ZMK firmware end-to-end: keymap and layer definitions, combos and hold-taps, Bluetooth advertising and pairing, and the split-half link between the two controllers.
